The York PA Area

Founded in 1741 by settlers from Philadelphia and named for the English city, York is a city that abounds in history and historical architecture. York was temporary capital of the Continental Congress, and the Articles of Confederation, which preceded the U.S. Constitution, were drafted and adopted in York. Later, during the Civil War, York became the largest Northern town occupied by the Confederate Army. All of this history comes alive in the many historical buildings and landmarks throughout the city.

With the York Motor Car Company, York was an early participant in the development of the automobile. The York Peppermint Pattie was also invented by Henry C. Kessler at his York Cone Company in York in 1940. To this day York continues to be an important agricultural and industrial center, continuing its tradition of manufacturing with the nearby Harley Davidson motorcycle plant. You will also find a very vibrant arts scene, with a great deal of local art on display in the city’s many galleries.
